Fire Retardant Silicone for Service Penetrations

Cartridge of white fire-resistant silicone Vitcas Fire Retardant Silicone

A service penetration through a wall or floor needs a solution matched to the partition, services and required fire performance. A silicone labelled fire retardant does not establish that any filled opening will maintain the partition's performance. Check which joint arrangement the product documentation covers before starting work.

Heat resistance and fire protection are different properties

Vitcas Fire Retardant Silicone is described for specified joints requiring fire protection. This is a different duty from an ordinary flexible joint beside an appliance that becomes hot during use.

For comparison, Vitcas Heat Resistant Silicone 315°C is selected for its stated thermal conditions and compatible substrates. A temperature rating does not describe the fire resistance period of a complete service penetration.

What information is needed to select the seal?

Record the partition material and thickness, opening dimensions and each service passing through it. Metal pipes, plastic pipes and cable bundles may need different arrangements. Include service spacing, supports and any additional components specified in the documented system.

Ask the supplier or contractor to confirm that the proposed detail matches an assessed application. Do not extend a declaration for one joint to a different substrate, larger opening or another service type without confirmation.

Check the complete detail before acceptance

Inspection should cover surface preparation, specified backing or filling materials, joint dimensions and curing requirements. A neat surface bead does not prove that the rest of the opening was correctly sealed.

Keep photographs taken before concealment, the product identification and installation records. If another cable is added or a pipe replaced later, check the system requirements again. The penetration may need to be reinstated even if its visible surface still looks intact.
